---|---|---|---|
Unlimited number of menus on the page Any number of menus configured independently or sharing some configuration files can be safely placed on the same page. Each menu instance is separate JavaScript object with it's own index so menus don't mix their actions or interfere in any other way. |
Unlimited number of menu items Number of menu items is limited only by browser's performance. Neither total number of items nor number of items in menu blocks is limited. Some navigation systems offered on the net have such limitations (i.e. 20 items max. or up to 10 items per block) |
Unlimited menu depth Depth of menu hierarchy isn't limited in any way. Menu can be used to navigate sites of any complexity unlike menu systems with amateur non-recursive implementations offering limited number of levels. |
Menu look configured with CSS Menu items appearance (font family, font color, background color, decoration, distances etc.) can be configured with CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) file. As long as CSS is standard format most web developers are familiar with, this approach makes menu system easy to learn and maintain. A lot of HTML editors can be used to visually build, modify and validate CSS files. |
Convertible orientation Same script can be used for horizontal, vertical or mixed menu orientation. Minimal configuration changes required. |
Per level geometry Geometry settings (offset of menu block from parent block, offset between menu items within menu block, size of menu item) can be defined separately for each level of menu. |
Per item geometry Geometry settings (offset of menu block from parent block, offset between menu items within menu block, size of menu item) can be defined separately for each item of menu. This feature allows for example to have items of different width in the same menu block. |
Inner HTML Any HTML code can be placed in menu item. This feature allows to use images (including animated ones) in menu items and/or apply complex item layout. This is another way (beside CSS) to configure menu appearance. With Inner HTML feature styles can be defined for each item separately. |
Rollover effects The look of an item changes when mouse is positioned over i.e. background color changes or text getting underlined. |
Graphical rollover effects The look (including images, text and layout) of an item changes when mouse is positioned over i.e. closed folder icon changes to open folder icon. |
Frames Targeting When item clicked page opens in a different frame or window. Possible targets are: other frame, new window, parent frame. |
Frames Overlapping Usually menu created in the document is seen only within containing frame, so to look properly all menu items should fit within the frame. With frames overlapping feature supported menu can overlap frame border and display its item over the document in other frame. |
Transition effects Supported by Internet Explorer 5+ these features make menu really attractive. Menu block transparency can be set independently for different levels in range 1-100%. 25 transition effects can be configured on block show and on block hide for each level. Effect durations are also adjustable. |
Smart submenus relocation Smart relocation feature when supported and enabled tries to keep visible all menu items that would normally go behind browser's window boundary. Different relocation behaviors supported. Very useful with low screen resolutions or big menu blocks. |
Tool tips (Hints) Temporary displays the box with text over menu item when mouse is over. Can be used to supply additional information (few sentences) about the targeted document. |
Static positioning When this feature is activated menu doesn't scroll with the content of the page but stays at the same distance from the edge of the browser window. |
Menu alignment The feature that allows to keep menu aligned horizontally (left, right, center) and/or vertically (top, bottom, center) on the page regardless of the browser's window size. Offsets can be defined to adjust menu position (i.e. 40px from the right edge of the document or 100px shift to the left from the center). Without this feature menu position is always specified absolutely from the top left edge of the document. |
Relative positioning With this feature supported menu is positioned on the page just by placing menu initialization block in relatively positioned element of the document. For example if menu need to be centered it can be placed in the table cell with align="center" attribute specified. If this feature is not supported then menu initialization block should be inserted just before closing <body> tag. |
Browser compatibility Range of browsers menu supports. Although older browsers are used quite rarely (<3%) for most sites it is very important to support as many browsers as possible. Browsers from different vendors and even versions of the same browser differ much in the way DHTML (Dynamic HTML) and DOM (Document Object Model) is supported, so wider compatibility results in bigger script size. |

Script size The size of the script in KBytes. Size of the custom configuration isn't taken into account. Heavy scripts keep visitors waiting while code is being downloaded. Creating compact and functional scripts is challenging task but such scripts have advantage on the market. |
