IE8 page config problem

I am viewing pages on IE8 for the first time and notice that the vertical menu block that displays fine previously has a problem.
The are items where my item text wraps onto a second line in the menu.
These items are now displayed on a single line and the whole menu block is the same width, screwing up the layout of the whole page.
