Adding a calendar

I am using OS X leopard and have just installed php_event_calendar. After enabling php and wrestling with the calendar installation (not exactly for the faint of heart), I think I have things sorted out. Now I do need some help.

1) I have made some simple tests and the Demo_horizontal calendar appears in my Firefox browser more condensed (occupies less space) than newly created ones with what I think are the default settings. Should these calendars be put into tables or frames in order to control their size?

2) I am new to php. Now that my simple tests work, can I use an existing html page layout, insert the appropriate calendar code and simply rename the file ('.php') for this to work?

thanks in advance,

The Doctor
