Modifying the onclick function - gets errors

I think this is a problem of not really understanding javascript enough but i get "error on page"s whenever I add any method inside the onclick function.

I want to use the "marked_one" value (ie the key extracted from column 1 in the content.js file) and execute some logic based on the value of a substringing of it but as soon as I add anything (like var xxx=marked_one.substring(0,1))) I get a page error.

Is there something else i should be doing or is this a problem due to the way Tigra uses the onclick????? Any suggestions (and examples) would be helpful....
