default/initial state of tree item/node

I want the initial state of the tree to be fully expanded when the user browses to the page, but thereafter, I want the tree to remember the state that the user left it in. Is there a nice, easy way to do this?

If I use the st:1 item scope setting for each item, the tree is fully expanded, but if the user browses away and then back again to the page that has the tree, it doesn't remember the state the user left it in. It fully expands it again.

TIA,
Brian Barnett
