Differentiating tree nodes with same name

How do you programmatically differentiate tree nodes that have the same name? The docs say there are three elements in the associative array: caption, link, and child items. If there are two nodes that have the same caption and a user specifies that he wants to put a file, or whatever, into that node, how do I know which node it was?

TIA,
Brian Barnett

There is unique index identifying each item (n_id property of tree_item object).
Note: these indexes are assigned dynamically, so if hierarchy changes indexes will be different.
Note2: PRO version has more flexible functionality to identify items
