What is modal?

I am using the modal version of the PRO calendar, and I have noticed that when the calendar is up I am still able to enter other fields within the form.

My definition of "modal" is that the parent window ceases to respond to user intput until the modal window is taken care of and dismissed. Like the behavior of a window displayed using "showModalDialog" in IE

so I guess I have two questions:
Am I doing something wrong?
If I am not, what is your definition of modal?

Thanks
